Back to School: A Fresh Start for Families

Back to school often means changes for children and family. These changes may include the first day of kindergarten, new teachers, classrooms and a change in routine. The anticipation and preparation as the new school year approaches can be exciting but can also be stressful for both children and parents. By easing the transition between home and school, parents can help children feel good about themselves and develop trusting relationships with other adults and peers.

Here are some tips to make your child's school year a fun, satisfying and smooth one:

  • First and foremost, be enthusiastic about the year because kids can sense if you're apprehensive. If you have a positive and confident outlook, your child will too!
  • Talk with your child about his or her feelings. Discuss their perceptions and possible fears about school in a supportive fashion.
  • Start daily routines that will provide consistency and structure. Routines can help create a sense of order and reduce anxiety.
  • Let your child become involved with the packing of the lunch or laying out clothes.
  • If your child is wary of separation, visit the new setting with them and meet your child's teachers.
  • Arrange playdates with other children from the program so that your child will see familiar faces in the classroom.

Preparation leads to a successful school year and don't  forget to have fun with your children.
